The battle royale aspect isn't evident for most of a typical round, as the game is structured such that each of the 64 players are split into groups of four, who will fight it out against one another in an arena. If you've played any of the previous games, or any of the various Bomberman clones out there, you should be OK. The basics are still the same: drop bombs to break blocks, get some power-ups, corner your opponents with bombs, and don't get blown up yourself. Super Bomberman R Online is classic Bomberman, but remixed to become a 64-player free-for-all. Perhaps it looks differently on other platforms.
It's not significant, but I did find it notable. I will note that when playing the Switch version, the gameplay looks a bit blurry (like there's a filter that makes it look as if I'm not wearing glasses, if that makes sense). The art style is pretty solid, giving the classic game a cutesy 3D look. I don't recall any Bomberman games ever having any plot. Recently, however, it's been announced that the game is coming to platforms people actually use, which means I can finally play it! Unfortunately, Super Bomberman R Online was Stadia-exclusive when I first heard about it, so I couldn't check it out.
Bomberman is one of those classic franchises that I'm always down to play, so when I heard a free-to-play battle royale was coming out, I was immediately excited.
